Janney was born in Boston, and raised to Dayton (Ohio). After her graduation from Kenyon College, she received an entire scholarship to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Janney became a television star in 1999, playing C. J. Cregg, a role she played in the political drama NBC's The West Wing (1999 to the year 2006) which won her 4 Primetime Emmy Awards. As a result of her performance in The Showtime series Masters of Sex, Margaret Scully, Janney won the Primetime Emmy Award 2014 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
